The family Formicidae includes about 300 genera belonging to 20 recent subfamilies. More than 12,000 species have been described worldwide. As thermophiles, ants are distributed mainly in the tropical and subtropical regions, where species richness and abundance of this family may be overwhelming. In Europe surely more than 600 ant species belonging to 8 subfamilies occur. All ants are eusocial insects, which live in societies overlapping adult generations. The colonies of all ants in temperate zone are perennial, lasting over more years.

Altogether 105 species (including one indoor species) are known from the Czech Republic (82 from Bohemia, and 101 from Moravia).

Determination keys: Central Europe: Czechowski et al. (2002), Seifert (1996), Kutter (1977); World: Bolton (1994).

Checklists: Czech Republic and Slovakia: Werner & Wiezik (2007); World: Bolton (1995), Bolton et al. (2007).
