families Melittidae, Megachilidae, Apidae, Andrenidae, Colletidae, and Halictidae

Bees represent with about 430 genera and 16,500 described species a rather numerous group of insects. This group is divided into 7 families: Melittidae, Megachilidae, Apidae, Andrenidae, Colletidae, Stenotritidae, and Halictidae. From these groups, only members of Stenotritidae are not present in Europe. The other families are represented in the Czech Republic and Slovakia by a few (Melittidae, Colletidae) to about some hundreds of species (Megachilidae, Apidae, Andrenidae, Halictidae) species. Since the highest diversity of bees is in arid or semiarid habitats of tropical and subtropical regions, most of the bees are very thermophilous. Majority of bees occurring in the Czech Republic and Slovakia have their northernmost border of distribution in the Pannonian steppe lowlands in southern Moravia and Slovakia. Only few species are boreoalpine with localities in northern parts of Europe and high mountains of Central Europe, e.g. several bumblebees (Bombus Latreille, 1802), solitary bees of the genus Dufourea Lepeletier, 1841, some Andrena Fabricius, 1775 species, and single species of some other bee genera. The opinions about phylogenetic relations among recent groups were changed many times but now they seem to be in most cases resolved. Megachilidae are the sister group of Apidae, and both groups together form a group of long-tongued bees (L-T) with prolonged proboscis. Females of Megachilidae collect pollen on a special scopa on the ventral side of the abdomen, which is typical only for this group contrariwise to the pollen collecting on hind legs in all other groups of bees. Another difference between these two families is present in the structure of the suture connecting the clypeus with the antennal basis. The second group with short proboscis, so-called short-tongued bees (S-T), is represented by the members of families Andrenidae, Colletidae, and Halictidae (and Australian Stenotritidae). Andrenidae differ from all other bees by the double suture under the antennae, which encloses the subantennal area. Colletidae are well characterized by the mouthpart structures: it is not sharp like in other groups but plate-like and wide and has a special function in the nest building. Halictidae lack these characters, their only apomorphy is the modification of the lacinia, but this character is hardly to observe. Only bees and members of the wasp subfamily Masarinae (Vespidae) changed their foraging strategy from hunting to pollen and nectar collecting. Bee female builds the nest only for her brood, and provisions the brood cells with pollen and/or nectar. Also the social behaviour and nest cleptoparasitism are life strategies, which are common among bees, and evidently typical for them.
